SGLT2 Inhibitors: Cardiovascular and Renoprotective Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a leading cause of cardiovascular and renal complications worldwide, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. The advent of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors represented a novel therapeutic approach, offering not only glycemic control but also substantial cardiovascular and renal benefits. This review aimed to evaluate the cardiovascular and renoprotective outcomes of SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with T2DM, focusing on clinical trial findings, mechanisms of action, and safety considerations. A comprehensive review of key clinical studies, including the EMPA-REG OUTCOME, CANVAS, and DECLARE-TIMI 58 trials, was conducted to assess the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on cardiovascular and renal outcomes in T2DM patients. SGLT2 inhibitors significantly reduced the risk of heart failure, cardiovascular events, and chronic kidney disease progression in patients with T2DM. These drugs also protected against albuminuria and renal function decline, demonstrating promising long-term outcomes in high-risk populations. SGLT2 inhibitors have proven to be a transformative treatment for cardiovascular and renal protection in T2DM patients. Ongoing research is essential to further explore their broader applications and refine patient management strategies.
