Abstract

Research has shown that parenting styles significantly impact children's and adolescents'
development, as the family is the primary socializing agency. Self-esteem, a selfassessment
of one's self-worth, has been extensively researched and linked to the mental,
psychological, and emotional development of children. There is no universally best
parenting style, as culture and individual characteristics differ. In Western cultures, selfesteem
is consistently negatively correlated with parenting styles characterized by low
acceptance and high protectiveness. Variations exist in which parenting styles lead to the
highest levels of self-esteem. This paper reviews the impact of parenting style on selfesteem.
