Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Contraception among Women of Reproductive Age in Bugembe Health Centre IV, Jinja District Eastern Uganda

Abstract

This study assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of contraception among women of
reproductive age in Bugembe Health Centre IV, Jinja district eastern Uganda. This was a crosssectional
study. Quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were utilized. After
collecting the data, the principal investigator checked the completed questionnaires for
consistency and completeness. Data were coded, cleaned and entered into the computer
using Microsoft Excel and then analyzed using SPSS version 20. The findings were then
summarized in the form of text, tables and graphs. According to the study, the majority of
the study participants had heard of family planning (93.1%), knew condoms as the most
common method of contraception (33.4%), got information from a health worker (43.1%) and
get family planning services from a health centre (88.4%) The majority of the study
participants in this study had a poor knowledge score (51.9%) while 48.1% had a good
knowledge score. The majority held the opinion that family planning is beneficial (83.4%),
would support a family member or friend to use family planning (80.9%) and did not find it
difficult to access family planning (85.9%) The present study also found out that majority of
the women had never used family planning (63.0%), child spacing was cited as the most
common reason for using family planning among users (73.1%) and wanting to have a child
was the most common reason among family planning non-users. The attitude of
reproductive-age women is good however there is poor knowledge and practice on
contraceptives.
