Organisational Characteristics as Antecedents of the Commitment of Academic Staff in Universities in Uganda

Abstract
The study sought to examine the extent to which four organisational characteristics, namely organisational structure, leadership, relations and support, were predictors of employee commitment. The correlational study involved 301 respondents from six universities in Uganda. Data were collected using a questionnaire whose validity and reliability were tested using Factor Analysis and Cronbach Alpha. Means were used for descriptive analysis, while multiple regression helped to test the hypotheses. Results showed that while organisational leadership, employee relationships and support were significant positive predictors of employee commitment, organisational structure was not. This led to the conclusion that good organisational leadership, employee relationships and support were probable pre-requisites for the commitment of the academic staff to their jobs, while organisational structure may not be. Hence the recommendation that stakeholders such as the directorate of human resource in the respective universities, foster good organisational leadership, employee relationships and support in order to enhance the commitment of the academic staff.
